What is a prepaid debit card?

A basic prepaid debit card is a payment card that isn’t linked to an account in the traditional sense. They’re usually basic ‘top up and go’ payment cards that can be loaded with money at a PayPoint location or via money transfer. They’re called prepaid cards because you have to add money before you can use them. Unlike a credit card or a debit card with an overdraft attached, you can only spend as much money as you add to a prepaid cash card.

How much does it cost to withdraw cash?

the account holder can use the Home card like any other bank card to withdraw money at ATMs around the world.

What if the ATM charges the account holder a fee?

Some ATMs charge their own fees, and they’ll usually say so before the account holder get started.

If the account holder see any extra fees, the account holder have the option to cancel and use a different ATM.

What if the ATM charges the account holder a fee, or asks the account holder to choose a currency?

ATMs may ask to convert the account holders money for them. If the account holder say yes to this option, they’ll often charge an unfair exchange rate.

What should I choose if the ATM asks to convert for the account holder ?

Make sure the account holder always say no to conversion, or choose to withdraw in the local currency. Here are some examples of what the account holder might see when using an ATM, and what the account holder should choose.


“Continue with conversion” or “Continue without conversion”
Choose: “Continue without conversion”
Debit in your home currency, or debit in the local currency
Choose: Debit in the local currency (e.g. EUR in Italy, or USD in the US)
“Let us convert the money for you — yes or no”
Choose: “No”
“Confirm an exchange rate — yes or no
”Choose: “No”

What happens if I let the ATM convert for the account holder ?

If the account holder choose to let the ATM convert for the account holder, they’ll often use an unfair exchange rate. We ran some research on this, and found on average you’ll be charged 6% more than if you withdraw without conversion. And the worst ATMs take up to 13% more.

Why should I decline the ATM conversion?

If the account holder decline the ATM conversion, then Home makes the conversion. If the account holder ’ve already got that currency in the Home account, the account holder  won’t be charged anything to convert.
If the account holder  don’t have that currency in the Home account, we’ll convert from the currency the account holder  have that has the lowest conversion fee.
